Six of eight signings from the Premier League: United's transfer blueprint takes shape

Manchester United’s recruitment under Ineos has quietly established a clear preference: buy players who already know the Premier League. Six of the eight first-team signings made across the summers of 2025 and 2026 have arrived from English top-flight clubs, and the evidence suggests that policy will shape the club’s transfer activity well into 2027.

The trend hardened after Matheus Cunha and Bryan Mbeumo hit the ground running following their moves to Old Trafford in 2025, reinforcing the football leadership’s belief that Premier League experience is worth the premium it commands. This summer’s four arrivals — Andrey Santos (Chelsea/Nottingham Forest loan), Youri Tielemans, Carlos Baleba (Brighton) and Karl Darlow (Leeds/Newcastle) — continued that logic without exception.

The only significant deviation came before the window opened. United had agreed a deal to sign Atalanta goalkeeper Ederson from Serie A, only for the move to collapse over fitness concerns. Once that fell through, every completed deal pointed back to the domestic market.

Release clauses have also become a recurring tool. United triggered one to sign Cunha last summer and used the same mechanism to land Tielemans this year, giving the club a degree of certainty in negotiations that aligns with the methodical approach overseen by sporting director Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada.

Looking ahead, United are expected to revive their interest in Newcastle left-back Lewis Hall next summer after he was identified as a priority this window. Centre-back recruitment is also on the agenda, and the same domestic filter is likely to apply. Micky van de Ven was linked with a move to Old Trafford this summer and remains a credible option, particularly if Lisandro Martinez’s injury problems persist. Nottingham Forest’s Murilo and Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite — for whom United previously submitted a bid — are among the alternatives being monitored.

Cristian Romero had also been mentioned in connection with United before his move to Atletico Madrid ended that possibility. The club’s data-driven recruitment model will assess defenders across Europe throughout the season, but the weighting given to Premier League-proven players appears firmly embedded in how Ineos approaches the market.
