Shearer to revisit 30-year Newcastle career with Lineker at charity fundraiser

Alan Shearer will sit down with Gary Lineker at a one-night-only event in London on 15 October to reflect on a career that spanned three decades and produced a Premier League-record 260 goals, with all proceeds going to the Alan Shearer Foundation’s Million Pound Mission.

The 56-year-old Newcastle United legend, who joined his hometown club for a then-record £15 million in 1996, told the Mirror the occasion carries particular weight. “It’s hard to believe it’s been 30 years since I signed for Newcastle,” Shearer said. “So much has happened in that time, and being able to look back over the last three decades, with Gary hosting in such an amazing venue, is going to be incredible.”

Lineker is expected to cover Shearer’s international career with England, his relationship with the late Kevin Keegan, and the pick of his record Premier League haul. The evening, titled Shearer: 30 Years, will be staged at Lightroom in London and will incorporate archive footage and photography presented as part of a 360° show.

The fundraising drive — the Million Pound Mission — aims to build a second hydrotherapy pool at the Alan Shearer Centre in Newcastle, which is run by charity St Cuthbert’s Care. The facility provides specialist support, including hydrotherapy and sensory play, completely free of charge to more than 5,000 people living with profound disabilities across the North East.

Shearer founded the centre two decades ago using money from his testimonial and has since raised £7 million towards its running costs. “What makes the night even more special for me is knowing it’s also supporting the Million Pound Mission,” he said. “I’ve been blown away by the response so far, and I’m incredibly honoured that people are getting behind the event and helping us raise money for a second hydrotherapy pool.”

The striker, who previously described the centre as more meaningful to him than any on-field achievement — including scoring for England and winning the Premier League — reiterated that message. “We know how important the pool is to members and their families, so every donation really does matter.”
