France U21 beat Estonia and edge closer to Euro 2027 qualification

France’s U21 side claimed three points in Estonia on Tuesday evening (0-2) in Euro 2027 U21 qualifying, and are now just one point away from securing their place at the continental tournament.

Leading Group C, Gérald Baticle’s men showed no signs of struggle against the group’s bottom side, though the final scoreline did not reflect their dominance. Steve Ngoura opened the scoring in the 24th minute, before Jean-Matteo Bahoya doubled the lead in the 68th. The statistics spoke volumes of their control: 36 shots with 14 on target, 21 corners and 77% possession, compared to zero shots from Estonia.

The match turned in the 28th minute with the direct red card for Estonian defender Sander Tovstik, leaving the hosts with ten men for over an hour of play. Despite their numerical advantage and a flood of chances, the young French side failed to extend their lead, partly due to a poorly maintained pitch. Ngoura himself squandered a significant number of attempts during the evening.

Bahoya was one of the standout performers: brought on in the 12th minute as a replacement for Ethan Mbappé, who suffered a right ankle injury, the forward finished with clinical precision to seal the result.

Just one point now separates the U21s from confirming their qualification for Euro 2027. They will have the opportunity to secure it next Saturday at home against Luxembourg.
