Seven Cambuur fans burned and injured as Feyenoord away supporters fire fireworks into stands

Seven SC Cambuur supporters were left with burns, hearing damage and vision injuries after Feyenoord away fans set off fireworks inside the Kooi Stadion during Sunday’s Eredivisie fixture in Leeuwarden, with play suspended for ten minutes before Feyenoord went on to win 5-2.

The incident occurred in the 12th minute when supporters in the south stand’s away section not only ignited fireworks but directed them towards the pitch and surrounding stands. Cambuur confirmed five injuries in an initial statement on Sunday evening, before updating that figure to seven the following afternoon.

“What should have been a football party between SC Cambuur and Feyenoord was marred in the twelfth minute this afternoon by the large-scale setting off of fireworks,” the club said. “It goes without saying that all care and attention goes out to these injured supporters, and everyone at the club sympathises enormously.”

Cambuur confirmed the match was resumed in line with protocols set by Dutch football’s governing body, the KNVB, and in consultation with all parties involved. The club also announced it would file an official report against the perpetrators, with Feyenoord leading the search for those responsible in cooperation with the authorities.

In their Monday update, Cambuur said personal contact had been made with six of the seven victims, and the club was still attempting to reach the seventh to provide aftercare and assistance.

Feyenoord general manager Robert Eenhoorn condemned the behaviour. “It is of course especially terrible for a number of injured Cambuur supporters,” he said. “I don’t understand the reason either, because normally you hear something in advance. It’s also not the first time that something like this happens.”

Cambuur’s statement was unequivocal in its condemnation: “Setting off and firing fireworks is completely unacceptable and in no way belongs in a football stadium. Together with the authorities, we will do everything in our power to track down and punish the perpetrators.”
