Eduardo Camavinga has not come to terms with his exclusion from Didier Deschamps’ squad for the 2026 World Cup. The 23-year-old Real Madrid midfielder reflected on this episode during an interview with Téléfoot, describing his non-selection as one of the biggest disappointments of his career.

« It’s a very big disappointment because every player wants to play in this competition, » said the former Rennes player. « These are new emotions because everything in my life has happened very quickly. It’s one of the biggest disappointments I’ve had in my career. » To get through this difficult period, Camavinga says he relied on his family and work: « When you face disappointments in life, the most important thing is to take refuge with your family and in work. That’s what I did throughout the summer. »

The player’s 2024-2025 season had been particularly challenging: several injuries to his adductors and knee, a lack of consistency and reduced playing time at club level all weighed on the former coach’s decision. Deschamps had acknowledged the legitimacy of his player’s frustration while standing by his choice: « He has the right to hold it against me. I understand that. Even though he had some injuries too. And the competition is also very, very strong. I don’t question what he is and his potential and what he’s capable of doing. »

The page appears to be turning for Camavinga nonetheless. Called up as early as September by new coach Zinedine Zidane, he made his return to Clairefontaine and reportedly had a convincing training camp, suggesting a future with France despite the wound inflicted by the World Cup.
