Billy Searle and Freddie Steward have been cleared to start for Leicester Tigers in Friday’s Gallagher Premiership semi-final against Northampton Saints at Franklin’s Gardens, ending weeks of uncertainty over their fitness.

Head coach Geoff Parling had been deliberately vague about the pair’s availability in the build-up to the knockout tie. Searle had been managing a hamstring injury while Steward was working through his rehabilitation following thumb surgery, leaving both players’ participation in doubt.

The returns are a significant boost for Leicester, though the same cannot be said for James O’Connor. The Australian was replaced at half-time during last week’s match against Bath and has been left out of the squad entirely. Should Tigers fall short this weekend, that appearance at the Rec will have been his final outing for the club.

Northampton, meanwhile, come into the semi-final at full strength after head coach Phil Dowson rotated his squad for their final regular-season fixture — a 38-31 defeat to Harlequins — with top spot already secured. The loss had no bearing on their seeding.

One selection decision of note sees Scotland centre Rory Hutchinson preferred at inside centre over England’s Fraser Dingwall, who drops to the bench as part of a 6-2 forward-to-back split. That configuration is widely seen as a deliberate response to Leicester’s dominance up front when the two sides last met — a 41-17 Tigers victory at Welford Road last month — with Dowson opting for additional forward cover to address that physical deficit.
