Scarlets appoint St Helens defence coach Eamon O'Carroll to replace departing Jared Payne
Scarlets have hired Eamon O'Carroll, 38, as their new defence coach after the former Ireland RL international impressed at Super League club St Helens. He replaces Jared Payne, who departs after three seasons following a review of the URC side's coaching staff.
Scarlets have appointed Eamon O’Carroll as their new defence coach, with the 38-year-old joining from Super League club St Helens once the current rugby league season concludes. He fills the vacancy left by Jared Payne, the former Ireland and Lions full-back who is leaving the Welsh region after three seasons following a coaching staff review.
O’Carroll arrives with a varied coaching CV that includes spells as head coach of Bradford Bulls and Newcastle Thunder, as well as an assistant role at Catalans Dragons. At St Helens, one of Super League’s most decorated clubs, he has earned a reputation as one of the more promising young coaches in the professional game.
Scarlets Interim Director of Rugby Nigel Davies was emphatic in his praise for the incoming coach. “First and foremost, he is an outstanding coach,” Davies said. “He has worked within elite high-performance environments at the top of professional rugby league and has built a stand-out reputation for his energy, attention to detail, work ethic and ability to develop players and drive standards every day.”
Davies was keen to stress that O’Carroll’s remit will stretch well beyond drawing up defensive structures. His role will encompass the broader performance programme, with a particular focus on the physical and behavioural standards the club expects from players competing in the United Rugby Championship.
“Defence is about far more than systems,” Davies added. “It is about attitude, commitment, trust and the willingness to compete for every moment of the game. Eamon brings those qualities in abundance. We want players who are not just fit enough to play rugby but fit enough to dominate the contact area, repeatedly get off the ground, reload and compete. Eamon shares that vision completely.”
O’Carroll will not be available immediately, with St Helens still in contention for the Super League Grand Final. His arrival at Parc y Scarlets is therefore contingent on the conclusion of the Super League campaign.
