Saracens move into Premiership top four with 24-12 derby win over Harlequins
Mark McCall signed off from StoneX Stadium with a 24-12 victory over Harlequins in his final home match as Saracens director of rugby, lifting the club into the Gallagher Premiership top four for the first time since November.
Saracens climbed into the Gallagher Premiership top four for the first time since November with a 24-12 victory over Harlequins at StoneX Stadium on Saturday, keeping their play-off hopes alive heading into the final round of the regular season.
The win was also a farewell occasion for director of rugby Mark McCall, who is departing after 15 trophy-laden years at the club. His side delivered a fitting send-off through tries from a penalty try, Max Malins, Nick Tompkins and Theo Dan, with number eight Tom Willis — himself leaving for Bordeaux — producing a dominant display in his own north London goodbye.
Saracens’ fifth successive league win was not without its anxious moments. A disjointed third quarter allowed Harlequins back into the contest, with Bryn Bradley and Cameron Anderson crossing late to give the scoreline a more competitive look. Tompkins’ 77th-minute try ultimately ended the visitors’ fightback and secured the result.
The contest opened brightly for the hosts. In the eighth minute, Saracens’ scrum drove Harlequins backwards and earned a penalty try, with Chandler Cunningham-South shown a yellow card in the process. Malins added a second before half-time, the score stemming from a muscular Willis carry that triggered a sequence of offloads finished off by Ben Earl’s pass.
Marcus Smith directed Harlequins’ attack with composure and showed tenacity in the tackle, but the visitors were consistently outfought up front and too often left their visits to the Saracens 22 without reward. Will Evans broke from a line-out to set up Bradley’s try in the 63rd minute and briefly threatened a Quins revival, but Saracens held firm.
Saracens now travel to Exeter next Saturday knowing that a win over the Chiefs would be enough to guarantee a place in the Premiership play-offs. Bristol are also in contention, making the final round of fixtures a three-way battle for the remaining knock-out spots. As recently as March, McCall had conceded that a title challenge was beyond his side following a 62-15 defeat at Bath, but a return to Twickenham is now within reach.
