Saracens and Bristol Bears face Gallagher Premiership play-off elimination on final weekend
Saracens and Bristol Bears must win on the final weekend of the Gallagher Premiership regular season and rely on results elsewhere to secure a top-four place, while Exeter Chiefs know a victory could be enough to snatch the last play-off berth.
Saracens and Bristol Bears enter the final round of the Gallagher Premiership regular season on the brink of elimination, with neither side able to guarantee a top-four finish regardless of their own result. Northampton Saints, Bath and Leicester Tigers have already secured play-off places, leaving Bristol, Saracens and Exeter Chiefs scrapping for the one remaining berth.
Exeter sit fourth in the standings on 55 points and hold the clearest path to qualification: win, and hope results elsewhere fall in their favour. A bonus-point victory would secure their place provided Bristol collect fewer than two points and Saracens fewer than three. A standard four-point win would also suffice if Bristol fail to score and Saracens collect fewer than two.
Bristol, on 50 points, and Saracens, on 52, are in a more precarious position. Neither can guarantee qualification this weekend, leaving both former champions dependent on a combination of their own performance and the outcomes of other fixtures. Both sides know their seasons could effectively be over by Saturday evening.
At the top of the table, Northampton are the only side still capable of securing a home semi-final this weekend. Phil Dowson’s side, who lead on 67 points, would guarantee a top-two finish with any victory over Gloucester. Even a draw could be sufficient depending on how Bath and Leicester fare in their respective fixtures.
Bath can also clinch a home semi-final, but Johann van Graan’s side need a bonus-point win and must hope Leicester take nothing from their final-round game. Leicester, currently third on 62 points, cannot mathematically guarantee a home play-off this weekend and will require results elsewhere to go their way.
With the top three places settled and the bottom four sides — Sale, Harlequins, Gloucester and Newcastle — already out of contention, the entire drama of the final round centres on that fourth and final play-off spot. For Exeter, the equation is straightforward. For Bristol and Saracens, the margin for error is gone.
