Safonov criticized but untouchable: PSG prepares contract extension until 2030
Despite questions about his performances in victories over Manchester City and Barcelona, Matvey Safonov remains Luis Enrique's number one goalkeeper. PSG is considering extending his contract by two years, until 2030.
Matvey Safonov retains the full confidence of Paris Saint-Germain, which is preparing a contract extension for its Russian goalkeeper despite recurring criticism of his performances in the Ligue des Champions.
Currently tied to the club until 2028, Safonov could see his deal extended by two additional seasons, until 2030. According to PSGInside-Actus, PSG wants to make it clear to him that he is part of its long-term project. The goalkeeper, for his part, is reportedly convinced he has found his place in the capital.
This decision comes in a context of questions, however. In victories against Manchester City (4-2) and FC Barcelona (4-2), the former Krasnodar goalkeeper was criticized for several goals conceded, notably in the clash against the Catalans. His aerial distribution and his management of set pieces continue to fuel debate.
Luis Enrique is not swayed. The Spanish coach starts him match after match, leaving Lucas Chevalier with no prospect of reversing the hierarchy in the short term. The coach’s support is now backed by a strong signal from the board.
This does not mean competition is ruled out. PSG’s interest in Japanese goalkeeper Zion Suzuki, whose arrival nearly materialized last summer, is a reminder that the club is monitoring the market. Safonov will therefore need to continue to convince to deserve the confidence Paris is about to show him on paper.
His progress with the ball at his feet and his solidity on his line are his main assets. They could be enough to win the day, even if criticism is unlikely to fade.
