Kompany hospitalized after collapse, out for several weeks; Danks takes interim charge at Bayern
Vincent Kompany collapsed during a Bayern Munich training session on Friday and has been hospitalized. Sporting director Max Eberl confirmed Saturday that the Belgian head coach will be sidelined for several weeks, without disclosing the cause. Assistant Aaron Danks will take interim charge.
Vincent Kompany will be absent from the Bayern Munich dugout for several weeks after collapsing during a training session on Friday. The Bavarian club made the news official on Saturday through sporting director Max Eberl.
The Belgian head coach suffered a sudden collapse while supervising his team’s session. He was quickly attended to and taken to hospital. The following day, Eberl sought to reassure the club’s entourage: “We notably spoke with his wife last night. It was obviously not a pleasant moment for all of us.”
The former Manchester City defender’s condition is now stabilized, but the sporting director refused to speculate on the exact cause of the incident. “I am not a doctor and I will make no comment,” he stated, clarifying only that medical teams are working to understand what happened. He did, however, confirm an absence measured “not in days, but in weeks.”
On the sporting front, assistant Aaron Danks will lead Bayern Munich during this period. The Englishman is no stranger to the role: he had already replaced Kompany last season during the Ligue des Champions semi-final against Paris Saint-Germain, when the Belgian coach was serving a suspension.
