Russell to face back-of-grid engine penalty as Mercedes weighs best race to minimise damage

George Russell will take a back-of-the-grid penalty for a full power unit change during the 2026 Formula 1 season, with Mercedes still working out the best race to absorb the hit. The decision follows confirmation that teammate Kimi Antonelli will serve an identical penalty at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, where he races as a home driver.

Antonelli’s penalty was triggered by a terminal power unit failure at the Barcelona Grand Prix in June, which exhausted his permitted allocation of engine components ahead of schedule. Mercedes has identified Monza as the least damaging venue for the Italian driver, citing the circuit’s multiple overtaking zones and the energy-starved nature of the track under 2026 regulations.

Andrew Shovlin, Mercedes’ trackside engineering director, explained the team’s thinking on the Nu Silver Arrows Radio Show. “Now you’ve got a real energy-starved circuit and it becomes one where there are four overtaking zones. You definitely can’t defend at all of them. And if you are a faster car, we expect it to be relatively straightforward to make progress.”

Shovlin also outlined the broader strategic logic behind timing such penalties. “The main point is based on where do you need the hardware. We’ve lost some internal combustion engines at reasonably low mileage. So the biggest thing is a case of we need to take it by this point.”

With Mercedes holding a lead in both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships, the team is keen to absorb the grid penalties while that buffer exists. “There’s a bit of a sense that we’ve got a lead in both championships,” Shovlin said. “Let’s do the painful stuff while we have a lead in both championships. Not, if that gets closer at the end, we don’t want to be piling more and more pressure on ourselves.”

Mercedes is not planning to have both drivers start from the back at the same race if it can be avoided, meaning Russell’s penalty is likely to fall at a different venue to Monza. The team is currently assessing the circuits immediately following the Italian Grand Prix for their overtaking characteristics and strategic value.

Russell currently leads the Formula 1 world championship, making the timing of any grid drop a particularly sensitive calculation for the Silver Arrows.
