Toto Wolff has firmly dismissed Helmut Marko’s suggestion that George Russell’s Formula 1 title window has closed, telling reporters after the United States Grand Prix in Austin that the Mercedes driver retains every quality needed to become world champion.

Marko, the former Red Bull motorsport adviser, made the pointed assessment ahead of the race at the Circuit of the Americas, arguing that Russell had been supplanted as Mercedes’ lead driver by 19-year-old team-mate Kimi Antonelli. “Russell is no longer the number one driver. Antonelli has quite clearly taken that spot from him. But Russell is one of the top drivers,” Marko said. “I doubt whether he’ll ever have another chance at the world title or be given number one status anywhere.”

Russell currently sits 123 points adrift of Antonelli in the drivers’ standings, with the Italian rookie leading the 2026 championship.

Wolff, however, was unequivocal in his defence of Russell when asked to respond post-race. “I start with Helmut — he’s my Austrian, not-so-buddy, but I respect his opinion. But I think he’s wrong on George. George has all the ability. I think the car doesn’t suit him.”

The Mercedes team principal acknowledged that the early part of the season had been psychologically difficult for Russell, who had arrived in 2026 expecting a title challenge only to find a highly-rated team-mate quickly asserting himself. “I think that at the beginning of the season, it is maybe difficult to cope with the situation where you’re feeling that this is my year to come, and then we have this wonderkid on the other side that starts to really chip away,” Wolff said.

He was adamant, though, that Russell’s broader record should not be discounted. “He has absolutely what it needs to win a championship. So I think it’s a bit too easy to say, let’s forget about all these years where he won in F2 and F3, his rookie years and the European championships back-to-back in karting — that’s still all there.”

The championship moves to Mexico City next, with the Mexican Grand Prix scheduled for 30 October to 1 November.
