Russell closes on Antonelli as F1 heads to Bahrain for second leg of triple-header
George Russell cut Kimi Antonelli's championship lead to 66 points after winning in Baku, with the season's second triple-header leg now set for Bahrain. Lewis Hamilton sits third, a further 37 points adrift of Russell.
George Russell arrives at the Bahrain Grand Prix with fresh momentum after converting pole position into victory at the Baku City Circuit, trimming Mercedes team-mate and championship leader Kimi Antonelli’s advantage to 66 points heading into the second leg of a triple-header.
Antonelli retains a commanding lead at the top of the drivers’ standings, but Russell’s Baku win has injected new tension into what had appeared to be a comfortable title defence. Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton occupies third place, a further 37 points behind Russell, keeping the constructors’ battle equally alive.
The Bahrain Grand Prix takes place at the Sepang International Circuit and follows directly from Azerbaijan as part of a demanding back-to-back-to-back stretch on the calendar. Practice sessions begin on Friday 2 October, with qualifying on Saturday 3 October and the race on Sunday 4 October.
The championship picture has shifted notably in recent rounds, with Russell’s consistency threatening to turn what was a sizeable deficit into a genuine title fight if Antonelli encounters any reliability or on-track difficulties in the coming weekends.
