Ruffy takes full blame for Tsarukyan KO: 'It was my fault, my carelessness'

Mauricio Ruffy has accepted full responsibility for his first-round knockout defeat to Arman Tsarukyan at UFC 331, issuing a detailed statement on social media on Wednesday in which he described the loss as a product of his own carelessness rather than any shortcoming in his preparation.

The Brazilian lightweight entered the co-main event bout — billed as a title eliminator — on short notice, having been called in just six weeks and four days before fight night. Ruffy said he felt confident and in control for much of the opening round, believing he had hurt Tsarukyan with an elbow to the ribs and noting that his opponent’s eye was visibly swollen. With seconds remaining in the round, however, Tsarukyan landed the finishing sequence that put Ruffy out cold.

“I arrived so confident in the fight that I wanted to go through everything for the first time,” Ruffy said. “I didn’t want to knock out the fight in the first round. I wanted to overcome the things inside my head… I wanted to prove myself that I was fine.”

Ruffy explained that his mindset going into the final seconds of the round contributed directly to the stoppage. Rather than protecting himself or seeking an early finish, he was focused on proving his ability to navigate difficult situations — a decision he now acknowledges cost him.

“An important thing to say is that the mistake was totally mine,” he said. “It was my fault, my carelessness, and his merit. Arman is an excellent fighter.”

The 28-year-old also addressed his physical and mental condition in the aftermath, reassuring fans that he is in good health and has been moved by the volume of supportive messages he has received since the defeat.

“I feel very well with the affection from all of you,” Ruffy said. “So many amazing messages I received… I really felt very supported and embraced by you all.”

The loss is a significant setback for Ruffy, who had been positioned as a genuine contender in the UFC’s lightweight division. Tsarukyan, meanwhile, strengthens his case for a title shot with the dominant finish.
