Ruffy demolishes Chandler with spinning heel kick and uppercut to demand lightweight title shot
Mauricio Ruffy stopped Michael Chandler at 4:29 of the first round at UFC White House on Sunday, finishing the former Bellator champion with a spinning heel kick and a brutal uppercut to extend his winning streak and stake a claim for a lightweight title shot.
Mauricio Ruffy dismantled Michael Chandler in the first round at UFC White House on Sunday, dropping the former Bellator champion with a spinning heel kick behind the ear before closing the show with a devastating uppercut at 4:29.
Ruffy entered the bout as the card’s heaviest favourite and wasted little time justifying that billing. From the opening exchanges, the Brazilian picked apart Chandler with patient, precise striking, using his height and reach advantage to keep the American on the outside. Chandler struggled to time his takedowns and could not find a clean path inside as Ruffy controlled the range with stiff jabs and probing kicks.
The finish began to take shape when Ruffy landed a spinning heel kick flush to the side of Chandler’s head. With Chandler visibly rocked, Ruffy swarmed with a combination that included a punishing body shot before uncorking a second spinning heel kick. A hellacious uppercut then sent Chandler to the canvas and the referee waved it off.
“Amazing. I’m so happy,” Ruffy said in his post-fight interview. “I’m very happy with this performance, very happy with this win. Thank you for the opportunity. Thank you to [Alexander Volkanovski] for training with me. I want to be the champion at this division. I do believe I am next up for the title shot.”
The victory gives Ruffy back-to-back knockouts over Chandler and Rafael Fiziev, firmly re-establishing him in the lightweight title conversation at 155 pounds. His combination of elite striking variety and composed ring generalship made him look every bit the contender he believes himself to be.
For Chandler, the defeat is a fourth consecutive loss and drops his UFC record to 2-6. The 38-year-old now faces serious questions about his future in the promotion, with no obvious path back to the title picture following another stoppage defeat.
