Rooney warns Carrick time is running out and United's signings have let Fernandes down

Wayne Rooney has issued a stark warning to Manchester United manager Michael Carrick, insisting the former Middlesbrough boss cannot afford to delay fixing a squad that has taken just four points from its opening three Premier League matches.

United’s stuttering start includes a 2-0 defeat at newly promoted Hull on the opening day, a 5-2 thrashing of Ipswich at Old Trafford, and a 2-2 draw with Everton on Sunday in which the Red Devils surrendered the lead twice. Six goals conceded in three games has sharpened the scrutiny on Carrick’s backline, and Rooney believes the manager’s window for patience has already closed.

“If you’re manager of Manchester United you know the pressure which comes with the job,” Rooney said on the Stick to United podcast. “He hasn’t got time to wait for next year. He can’t sit there and go, ‘Well, I’ll wait till next year, then I’ll have my defence sorted.’ You’re getting more and more American owners who want success straight away.”

Rooney drew a pointed comparison with Arsenal’s rebuild under Mikel Arteta, acknowledging that long-term projects can work — but arguing that United’s current standing demands urgency rather than patience. “Do we want to win the Champions League? Of course we do. But in terms of this process we’re going through, we’re going to have to accept we’re not quite at that level yet,” he said.

The former England captain also turned his attention to United’s summer transfer activity, which brought in three midfielders and a back-up goalkeeper but no defensive reinforcements. Rooney was unconvinced the arrivals were enough to shift the club’s trajectory, and suggested captain Bruno Fernandes is bearing the burden of an under-resourced squad.

“There is nothing in there which is saying to me these players are going to take Man United to the next level,” Rooney said. “I love Bruno. I think he’s brilliant. He must be thinking, ‘Please bring me some help. I’m doing everything I can.’ And I don’t think the club have done that with the signings.”

Carrick has publicly stated he is satisfied with the players at his disposal, but Rooney was sceptical of that framing. “I know Michael’s come out and said he’s happy with the players they’ve got in. I don’t think any manager’s happy. He’s going to have to come out and say the right things — of course every manager does that.”

United’s next Premier League fixture will offer Carrick an early opportunity to silence the doubters, though the defensive frailties Rooney highlighted will need to be addressed if the club is to climb away from the lower reaches of the early-season table.
