Ronaldo's dream of a Messi World Cup final stays fantasy as Portugal crash out in round of 16

Cristiano Ronaldo's 2022 vision of a Portugal v Argentina World Cup final, shared in a Piers Morgan interview, has come to nothing after Portugal were eliminated by Spain in the round of 16, while Messi's Argentina advance to the semi-finals against England.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s oft-cited dream of a World Cup final showdown with Lionel Messi will remain exactly that — a dream — after Portugal were knocked out by Spain in the round of 16 at World Cup 2026, while Argentina marched into the semi-finals.

The contrast could hardly be sharper. Messi’s Argentina, already world champions from 2022, will face England in Atlanta in the last four, chasing a second consecutive title. Ronaldo, meanwhile, has boarded an early flight home after failing to steer Portugal past Spain despite featuring in every match of the tournament and scoring three goals across his sixth World Cup appearance.

The elimination gives renewed bite to a comment Ronaldo made during his headline-grabbing 2022 sit-down interview with Piers Morgan. When Morgan floated the hypothetical of a Portugal v Argentina final in which both players scored twice before Ronaldo completed a hat-trick winner, Ronaldo needed just two words to sum up his reaction: “Too good.” That scenario has now been ruled out at what is widely expected to be the final World Cup for both men.

Ronaldo’s World Cup record in the twilight of his career makes for difficult reading. At the 2022 tournament in Qatar, manager Fernando Santos dropped him for the round-of-16 win over Switzerland following a tactical dispute, and Portugal were subsequently beaten 1-0 by Morocco in the quarter-finals — a result that cost Santos his job. Messi’s Argentina lifted the trophy that winter, compounding the pain.

Under Roberto Martinez at World Cup 2026, Portugal showed improvement in terms of progression but still could not clear the round-of-16 hurdle, falling to Spain. Ronaldo’s three goals were a personal contribution, yet they were not enough to extend the campaign.

Messi, by contrast, continues to perform on the grandest stage. Argentina’s place in the semi-finals sets up a blockbuster tie with England in Atlanta, with the winner facing either France or Spain in the final. The possibility of a Ronaldo-Messi final, which captured the imagination of fans for years, has now passed without ever materialising at a World Cup.
