Ronaldo walks out on Portugal after Jorge Jesus benches then ignores him
Cristiano Ronaldo has left the Portugal national team camp following a falling out with new head coach Jorge Jesus, who reneged on an agreement over Ronaldo's playing time and then publicly dismissed the row.
Cristiano Ronaldo has departed the Portugal national team camp in what is widely believed in his home country to mark the end of his international career, after a public dispute with head coach Jorge Jesus over selection promises that were broken during the June international window.
Ronaldo posted a statement to his 679 million Instagram followers confirming his exit: “After the press conference of the National Team coach, and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I decided to leave the National Team camp. In due time, I will tell all the Portuguese about the reasons that motivated my departure from the national team, which I always dedicated myself to. Now it’s time to wish good luck to Portugal and all my teammates, without exception.”
According to Spanish outlet Marca, the flashpoint came during Portugal’s second fixture of the break, against Norway. Jesus had reportedly agreed with the 41-year-old that he would feature only in the first and fourth games of the window. When Ronaldo was asked to warm up with the score at 1-1 against Norway, it appeared that agreement had been torn up — only for Jesus to leave him unused once Portugal retook the lead. Ronaldo left the stadium furious at what he regarded as a deliberate snub.
The Al-Nassr forward then trained alone ahead of the Denmark fixture, while Jesus addressed the situation at his press conference with studied indifference: “There was no incident whatsoever: as coach, I decided not to bring him on. It’s nothing to make a fuss about.”
Those comments appear to have been the final straw. Marca reports that Ronaldo headed for his private jet, with Jesus and federation president Pedro Proenca travelling to the airport in an attempt to persuade him to return — without success.
The appointment of Jesus, who worked alongside Ronaldo at Al-Nassr during the 2025-26 Saudi Pro League-winning season, had been seen partly as a move to manage the forward’s international twilight carefully following Roberto Martinez’s departure after Portugal’s elimination at World Cup 2026. That calculation has now spectacularly unravelled.
Ronaldo holds Portugal’s all-time records for caps (234) and goals (146), a world record tally in international football. He has not publicly confirmed retirement from international duty, but the tone of his statement — and the circumstances of his departure — suggest his time in the national jersey may be over.
