Cristiano Ronaldo ended his international career on Thursday after 23 years wearing Portugal’s colours, 246 caps and 146 goals. The 41-year-old striker posted a farewell message on social media, announcing he was returning the Seleçao’s number 7 shirt “to the future”.

The announcement comes amid tension. Suspended for thirty days by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) for leaving the squad before the Nations League match against Denmark in Copenhagen last month, Ronaldo was set to be recalled for November’s gathering. Coach Jorge Jesus, who was to unveil his squad on Friday, had planned to include him. By making his retirement public the day before, CR7 pre-empted that announcement.

The rift runs deeper still. According to Portuguese media outlet Observador, the FPF had proposed the legend an official farewell match — an exit comparable to the one offered to Lionel Messi with Argentina. Ronaldo reportedly refused. The five-time Ballon d’Or winner also declined a phone call from Jorge Jesus, even as federation president Pedro Proença had offered to act as intermediary.

This abrupt ending contrasts with Ronaldo’s status in Portuguese football history. Euro 2016 winner and all-time international goalscoring record holder, he leaves the international stage without ceremony, after several months in which his presence within the squad had become a source of tension. The chapter is closed, without a handshake.
