Roma move could hand Manchester United £4.3m windfall from Garnacho sell-on clause
Chelsea are willing to listen to permanent offers for Alejandro Garnacho, valued at around £43m, with Roma emerging as serious suitors. A completed deal would trigger Manchester United's 10 per cent sell-on clause, netting the club approximately £4.3m.
Manchester United could pocket £4.3m from a sell-on clause if Chelsea complete the sale of Alejandro Garnacho to Roma this summer, with the Italian club accelerating talks to bring the 22-year-old Argentine winger to Serie A.
Garnacho only moved to Stamford Bridge last summer in a £40m deal, but he struggled to establish himself under new head coach Xabi Alonso, managing just one goal and four assists across 24 Premier League appearances as he was frequently relegated to the bench. Chelsea are now open to a permanent departure — they have no interest in a loan arrangement — and value Garnacho at around £43m.
Alonso addressed the situation at his first press conference in West London on Monday, saying: “We have spoken with the sports directors, and there is an interest from him, from other clubs, so let’s see how it develops.” The Spaniard’s comments did little to suggest Garnacho has a future at the club, despite being under contract until 2032.
Roma’s pursuit has gathered pace after the Serie A side initially explored a loan option. The club are now working to restructure their attacking department to create both the financial room and squad space needed to fund a permanent move. Sunderland have been linked with Roma winger Matias Soule, and sources indicate the Italian club are pushing to finalise that deal as a precursor to any approach for Garnacho.
United retain a 10 per cent sell-on clause from last summer’s transfer, meaning a £43m fee would send £4.3m directly back to Old Trafford. The windfall would arrive at a useful moment for the club, who are already set to receive funds from Mason Greenwood’s £38m move to Fenerbahce this week.
