Starting in place of Pedri for the second consecutive time against France (2-0), Fabian Ruiz delivered a masterful performance in the semi-final and appears to have definitively secured his place as left-centre midfielder for the final on July 19.

Fabian Ruiz sounded the death knell for Pedri’s hopes of starting in the 2026 World Cup semi-final, Tuesday evening at AT&T Stadium, where Spain dominated France 2-0 to qualify for the final.

For the second consecutive time, Luis de la Fuente left Pedri out of the starting XI in favour of the Paris Saint-Germain midfielder. A decision that could have raised eyebrows: the 23-year-old Barcelona player had started in the first five matches of La Roja in this World Cup, before being relegated to the bench. But his rival’s performance made the manager’s choice difficult to contest.

With 7 balls recovered and 5 duels won out of 6, the PSG left-footer dominated the midfield from start to finish. Valuable in both directions of play, he was directly responsible for Spain’s second goal, scored by Pedro Porro in the 58th minute, his very high positioning on the pitch allowing him to constantly influence the battle for second balls.

The Spanish press spared no praise. “Fabian imposes his law. Watching him play is a treat,” wrote Marca. AS agreed: “He gave a true lesson in how to protect the ball, which proved invaluable for the national team during build-up play. A superb performance.”

Pedri, meanwhile, is moving further away from the starting XI each day. He who was supposed to embody La Roja’s creativity — breaking lines, gaining ground with the ball at his feet, dictating play as he does at Barcelona — is struggling to rediscover his usual level in this World Cup. His direct rival, on the other hand, left no doubt about his current form.

Barring a turnaround, Fabian Ruiz should therefore start the World Cup final, Sunday July 19 at MetLife Stadium in New York.
