Christian Rodriguez honoured his late coach Duke Roufus with a two-move finish at UFC Fight Night 279 in Las Vegas on Saturday, dropping Hyder Amil with a shin-to-chin head kick before locking in a guillotine choke to end the featherweight contest in the opening round.

Rodriguez (13-4) landed the head kick flush, leaving Amil (11-3) barely conscious before the guillotine put the fight beyond doubt. In his post-fight interview, Rodriguez was quick to credit Roufus, the kickboxing legend who passed away in October, as the source of the technique.

“My coach who passed away in October, his name was Duke Roufus, he was a kickboxing legend,” Rodriguez said. “He was known for head kicks… When people kind of start defending like a boxer, the head kick will always be there. And it worked out perfectly. It’s something that he passed on to me, and I still have that knowledge. So, that’s something we capitalized on.”

The victory carried extra weight beyond the tribute. It snapped back-to-back losses — the only time in Rodriguez’s career he had dropped consecutive fights — and ended a 10-month layoff that followed Roufus’ death. After losing his coach, Rodriguez relocated to Xtreme Couture in Las Vegas to train under Eric Nicksick.

Rodriguez said the extended time away from competition reshaped him both as a fighter and as a person, and reignited a passion for the sport he feared he might be losing.

“I missed the sport so much; it’s been a long 10 months,” he said. “But I feel like the time away definitely made me into a different person. It’s definitely brought the love for the sport again for me.”

With the win secured and his footing in the featherweight division restored, Rodriguez made clear he has no intention of slowing down. “I want to stay active,” he said, signalling that Saturday’s emotional return was the start of a new chapter rather than a one-off comeback.
