Retired from France duty, Deschamps watches Concarneau's Ligue 3 victory
The day after Zinédine Zidane's first squad list as France manager, Didier Deschamps travelled to Concarneau to watch US Concarneau's 2-0 victory over SM Caen, the club backed by Kylian Mbappé.
Didier Deschamps spent his Saturday in the stands at Stade Guy-Piriou in Concarneau, the day after Zinédine Zidane’s first squad list as France manager. The former France coach, who led the Bleus from 2012 to 2026, watched US Concarneau beat SM Caen 2-0 in the seventh round of Ligue 3.
Deschamps’ connection to the Breton club is not new: he maintains a long-standing friendship with Jacques Piriou, president of US Concarneau. The match took on added significance as the opposing Norman club has Kylian Mbappé as a shareholder, one of the central figures of the former manager’s tenure.
On the pitch, the home side settled the matter in just two minutes, thanks to goals from Jimmy Halby Touré (66th) and Stan Janno (68th). Concarneau, unbeaten since the start of the season, climbed to third place in the standings, ahead of Caen on equal points but with fewer defeats.
For Stade Malherbe and coach Gaël Clichy, the defeat complicates their direct promotion ambitions in Ligue 2. The Norman club now sits fifth, three points behind La Roche-sur-Yon in second. Deschamps, meanwhile, left the stadium away from the cameras, enjoying a weekend of football without pressure.
