Rice escapes red card as 10-man Arsenal suffer heaviest Premier League defeat in three years

Declan Rice was shown only a yellow card after kicking out at Brighton substitute Malick Yalcouye in the 96th minute of Arsenal’s 3-0 Premier League defeat at the Amex Stadium, a result that ended the Gunners’ unbeaten start to their title defence.

The England midfielder lashed out at Yalcouye’s legs after being closed down, swiping at his opponent as he passed the ball towards the wing. Yalcouye fell to the ground and appealed to referee Darren England, who witnessed the incident and produced a yellow card. Whether VAR reviewed the challenge before England blew for full-time remains unclear.

Rice could consider himself fortunate given recent precedent. Manchester City’s Phil Foden was sent off last weekend for kicking out at Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, while Aston Villa’s Joao Gomes received a red card following a VAR review for a similar offence against Brighton’s Georginio Rutter. Both of those incidents involved the offender kicking upward from the ground; Rice’s challenge occurred while both players were on their feet and running.

The defeat itself was a sobering reality check for Mikel Arteta’s side, who arrived on the south coast looking to equal a 123-year club record by winning their first eight matches of the season. Instead, they were undone by first-half goals from the in-form Pascal Gross and teenage striker Charalampos Kostoulas, before Chema Andres headed in a corner before the hour mark to complete the rout on Brighton’s 125th anniversary.

Arteta offered no excuses after the final whistle, conceding his side were second best throughout. “I think they deserve to win the game,” he said. “It started by us not doing the basics right for long periods, especially a lot of the first half. That set the tone of the game.”

The Arsenal manager pointed to a failure to win individual duels as the root cause of the collapse. “We didn’t win enough duels and that stretches you and gives you no option to dominate the game or the territory. On top of that when you regain that ball we were extremely poor, with the technical errors that we made and especially with the principles that we didn’t apply against a team that wants to press you man to man.”

The 3-0 scoreline represents Arsenal’s heaviest Premier League defeat in more than three years and raises early questions about the depth of their title credentials, even if it is only their first loss of the campaign.
