Dustin Poirier was arrested for public drunkenness at an Atlanta airport after being removed from a flight, with video footage of the incident released by TMZ on Tuesday drawing widespread reaction from the MMA community.

The footage shows the retired UFC lightweight contender in an aggressive verbal confrontation with a police officer, during which he abused the officer and several bystanders. The situation did not escalate to physical violence, but the footage prompted immediate public scrutiny of the former title challenger.

Poirier responded to the release of the video with a candid personal statement. “I’m at the point where I need some help,” he admitted, acknowledging the severity of the incident.

Reactions from fellow fighters were mixed. MMA veteran King Green initially defended Poirier before the footage became public, framing the arrest as an overreaction. “You’re telling me on Father’s Day I can’t get drunk?” Green wrote. “With all the shit we go through, let me enjoy my drink and leave me the f*ck alone.”

Green’s sympathy was not shared by all. Longtime Poirier rival Colby Covington took multiple public shots at the retired fighter over the incident, seizing on the footage to criticise his former adversary.

Poirier, who announced his retirement from MMA earlier this year after a lengthy career that included two interim UFC lightweight title reigns and high-profile bouts against Conor McGregor and Charles Oliveira, had been widely regarded as one of the sport’s more respected veterans. The arrest and his own admission that he is seeking help mark a difficult chapter following the end of his fighting career.
