The relegation of Girondins de Bordeaux to Régional 1, confirmed Friday by the Paris administrative court, drew a rare admission of pain from Alain Giresse. The man with 592 matches in Bordeaux colours between 1970 and 1986 gave La Dépêche a poignant account of the shipwreck of the club of his life.

“It’s an entire chapter of my life collapsing,” confides the 1984 European champion with the French national team. Giresse acknowledges that the decision did not surprise him: “Unfortunately, the case was so badly handled that it was almost miraculous. It’s the confirmation of a process that has been unfolding since the DNCG hearing. The new investors unfortunately were unable to counterbalance the various rulings that had been issued. It’s truly infinite sadness!”

Yet the former Bordeaux captain refuses to sign the club’s death certificate. He had supported the takeover project led by Sparta Capital and believes one final outcome remains possible. “When the new investors arrived, they contacted me. I thought these people were very serious. Now, what will their attitude be? I think there’s still a small glimmer of hope, but it’s very minimal,” he explains.

Giresse nonetheless admits contemplating the worst. Asked about the possibility of the Girondins simply disappearing, he simply answers “yes”, before qualifying: “You always want to believe, always hope. It’s when we’re confronted with the worst final situation, when everyone stops and the investors withdraw, that we can conclude the Girondins no longer exist and we’ll have to start over. How? In what way? There are ten thousand questions we can ask and don’t have answers to.”

If a rebuild were to begin, it would take time, he warns, given how degraded the financial situation is and how reduced the club’s structures now are. For someone who experienced everything there — the early days as a kid, the captain’s armband, the titles — one certainty remains: “History cannot end in 2026.”
