Real Betis pulled off a double at the expense of the Mbappé brothers: four days after beating Real Madrid in La Liga (1-0), the Andalusian club claimed their first UEFA Champions League victory by winning away at Lille (3-2) on Tuesday evening.

The common thread between these two successes? A Mbappé in the opposing camp. Last Friday, it was Kylian who first faced the Verdiblancos. The Real Madrid striker missed several clear-cut chances at Estadio de La Cartuja, and most notably squandered the equalizing penalty in stoppage time (90+4).

Four days later, it was his younger brother Ethan who cracked. After providing the assist for Lille’s opening goal, the young attacking midfielder lost his composure by elbowing Natan in the 56th minute, just as Betis had scored two consecutive goals. A crude gesture immediately punished with a red card.

The Seville club did not miss the opportunity to publicly savor this double coincidence. On its X account, Betis posted a meme featuring actor Willem Dafoe with his arms raised to the sky, accompanied by the message: “Every time a Mbappé hears the words ‘Real Betis Balompié’.” A digital jab that quickly circulated on social media.

With this success at Pierre-Mauroy, Real Betis made a remarkable entrance into European competition, while LOSC, reduced to ten men, suffers a defeat that complicates their start to their UEFA Champions League campaign.
