RC Lens closes away section for Lille derby after Bruges incidents
RC Lens has decided to close the away supporters' section at Stade Pierre-Mauroy for Friday's derby against LOSC, in response to incidents that occurred during their Champions League trip to Bruges last week.
RC Lens announced on Monday that no supporters of the Sang et Or will be admitted to the away section at Stade Pierre-Mauroy on Friday evening for the derby against LOSC. The decision, taken by the Artois club itself and not by the Prefecture, follows the disturbances that occurred during their Champions League trip to Bruges.
According to Voix du Nord, numerous flares were lit during that match, causing a brief interruption as the smoke cleared. More seriously, some pyrotechnic devices landed in other sections, affecting supporters with reduced mobility.
RC Lens is already facing the threat of a UEFA sanction. The club had previously been fined €15,000 after flares were set off during an away trip to Prague. The Bruges incidents expose RC Lens to a much heavier penalty from the European governing body.
By preemptively closing the away section, the club is choosing to act proactively rather than face a forced administrative or sporting decision — at the cost of a measure that deprives its own fans of a highly anticipated derby. LOSC currently occupies second place in Ligue 1, while Lens, buoyed by three consecutive league victories, is climbing the standings.
