Rashford reintegration talks open door to Manchester United stay after Barcelona snub
Marcus Rashford could remain at Manchester United beyond this summer's transfer window after positive talks between the club and the player's camp, following Barcelona's decision to sign Anthony Gordon instead of activating his £26m purchase option.
Marcus Rashford is being considered for reintegration at Manchester United after talks between the club and the player’s camp laid the groundwork for his return, according to reports. The 28-year-old had been widely expected to leave Old Trafford permanently this summer, but a permanent exit now looks less certain.
Rashford spent the 2024-25 season on loan at Barcelona, contributing to 28 goals during his time at the Nou Camp. However, he was blindsided when the Catalan club opted against triggering their £26m purchase option and instead moved to sign Anthony Gordon for £69m. Rashford had been determined to extend his stay in Catalonia, but United are reluctant to re-enter negotiations with Barcelona.
The forward is currently representing England at the World Cup in North America and is expected to report to Carrington for pre-season approximately three weeks after England’s exit from the tournament. He will join the first-team group under manager Michael Carrick and could feature in some of United’s six pre-season friendlies ahead of the Premier League season opener on August 22.
United are unwilling to sanction a third loan move — Rashford also spent time at Aston Villa before his Barcelona spell — and there is now a willingness on all sides to consider a full reintegration for the academy graduate. That outcome is not yet guaranteed, and a concrete offer later in the window could still alter the situation.
Rashford is said to prefer seeing out the final two years of his contract rather than agreeing a permanent transfer to another Premier League club at this stage, which has further opened the door to staying at United. He had previously been ostracised into what was described as a ‘bomb squad’ by former manager Ruben Amorim 12 months ago.
Should Rashford remain, United’s plans to strengthen on the left flank could be revised. The club had been monitoring Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye and West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville as potential additions, but those targets could be shelved. Rashford would instead compete with Matheus Cunha and Patrick Dorgu on the left, and could also provide cover as a centre-forward alternative to Benjamin Sesko.
Any funds freed up by not signing a winger could be redirected into midfield reinforcements, with Manuel Ugarte set to miss the majority of next season through a serious knee injury. United are currently working on a deal for West Ham midfielder Mateus Fernandes, having already agreed to sign Ederson from Atalanta.
