Marcus Rashford is edging towards staying at Manchester United after positive discussions between the club and the forward’s representatives laid the groundwork for a potential reintegration, according to the Manchester Evening News.

Rashford, 28, is currently representing England at the World Cup but is expected to return to United’s Carrington training base for pre-season in the coming weeks. He will link up with the first-team squad under new head coach Michael Carrick and will be in contention for selection across the six pre-season friendlies before the Premier League campaign opens on 22 August.

The development marks a significant shift in the narrative around Rashford’s future. It had widely been assumed he would leave Old Trafford permanently this summer, particularly after Barcelona opted against triggering a £26 million purchase clause following his loan spell at the Nou Camp. Rashford contributed to 28 goals during his time in Catalonia, but Barcelona instead moved to sign his England teammate Anthony Gordon in a £69 million deal.

United are currently unwilling to sanction a third consecutive loan — Rashford also spent time at Aston Villa — and while Rashford had been keen to extend his stay in Spain, the club are reluctant to re-enter negotiations with Barcelona. Premier League interest is anticipated, though Rashford is said to prefer running down the final two years of his contract rather than committing to a permanent move to another top-flight English side at this stage.

A late transfer window offer could still change the picture, and a permanent exit has not been ruled out entirely. But for now, both parties appear willing to explore a path back for the academy graduate, who was frozen out of the first-team setup by former manager Ruben Amorim last season.

Should Rashford be reintegrated, he would compete for the left-flank role alongside Matheus Cunha and Patrick Dorgu, and could also provide central cover for Benjamin Sesko. United have been monitoring Everton’s Iliman Ndiaye and West Ham’s Crysencio Summerville as potential wide additions, but those pursuits may be shelved if Rashford remains. Any funds saved on a wide left signing could instead be redirected towards midfield reinforcement.
