Rashford, Mainoo and Shaw among eight doubts as United travel to face Como
Manchester United face a depleted squad for their Champions League trip to Como, with Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo, Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez and Leny Yoro among eight players absent from Tuesday's training session at Carrington.
Manchester United will travel to Italy for their third Champions League group game against Como with significant injury concerns, after eight players were absent from Tuesday morning’s training session at Carrington.
Marcus Rashford, Kobbie Mainoo, Luke Shaw, Lisandro Martinez, Ayden Heaven, Leny Yoro, Benjamin Sesko and Patrick Dorgu all missed the session overseen by interim manager Michael Carrick. The club confirmed late fitness checks would determine whether any of the injured players could join the travelling squad, though inclusion appears unlikely for most.
Rashford has been managing a hip issue, while Mainoo — who missed the previous two fixtures against Atletico Madrid and Leeds — was again absent with a minor injury. Shaw, who played the full 90 minutes in United’s 1-1 draw with Tottenham a fortnight ago, has since picked up a knock and has been sidelined for a second time this season. The left-back had earlier missed three games before returning against Fulham on 20 September.
Martinez was substituted at half-time in last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Leeds after picking up a knock, and did not train on Tuesday. Heaven was ruled out through illness, having already missed the Leeds trip for the same reason.
Yoro is suspended rather than injured — the young defender received a red card against Atletico Madrid — but Carrick confirmed he would complete full training while the main group took part in a lighter session ahead of the flight to Italy.
Sesko and Dorgu remain longer-term absentees. Sesko is sidelined with a shin problem, and Carrick has said he is uncertain of the striker’s return timeline. Dorgu withdrew from Denmark’s September international camp with a suspected hamstring injury sustained against Wales.
United head into the Como fixture having won their opener against Sabah before losing to Atletico Madrid. Their opponents are in strong domestic form, sitting fifth in Serie A under former Arsenal midfielder Cesc Fabregas. Como opened their Champions League campaign with a 4-1 home win over RB Leipzig but lost 3-2 away to Feyenoord last week.
The 22-man training squad named for the trip includes goalkeepers Lammens, Darlow, Heaton and Mee; defenders Maguire, De Ligt, Amass, Armer, Dalot and Kamason; midfielders Mount, T. Fletcher, J. Fletcher, Tielemans, Baleba, Santos and Fernandes; and forwards Lacey, Zirkzee, Mbeumo, Cunha and Amad.
