Christopher, a 47-year-old amateur player and devoted AJ Auxerre supporter, died on Sunday, October 18 after a cardiac episode during a Départemental 3 match in Yonne. He leaves two children, also registered with AS Montoise, his club.

The tragedy occurred during the match between AS Montoise and Union Vergigny-Saint-Florentin Portugais. Early in the second half, Christopher experienced chest pain and shortness of breath before collapsing on the pitch, according to France 3 Bourgogne-Franche-Comté. A volunteer firefighter present in the stands immediately provided first aid, assisted by other spectators. Medical teams managed to resuscitate him on site, but despite his transfer to Auxerre hospital, he died that evening.

A season-ticket holder at Stade de l’Abbé-Deschamps for many years, Christopher was a familiar figure at the Burgundy club. AJ Auxerre issued a condolence message the next day: « AJ Auxerre extends its sincere condolences to the family and loved ones of Christopher, who died after a cardiac episode during a football match with his Mont-Saint-Sulpice team. A season-ticket holder at Abbé Deschamps, Christopher was, like his children, a devoted AJA supporter. A tribute will be paid to him on Sunday before the match against Le Mans. »

Christopher’s death sparked strong emotion throughout local football. The president of the Yonne district, Christophe Caillet, responded gravely: « This is an absolute tragedy. There is real reflection to be undertaken in the coming months, so that our sporting practice can be better supported medically. » AS Montoise, for its part, opened an online fundraiser to support the family.
