Goncalo Ramos rescued Portugal with a bullet header deep into stoppage time on Thursday, sealing a 2-1 victory over Croatia in Toronto and keeping Cristiano Ronaldo’s World Cup dream alive for at least one more round.

Ronaldo had written his own piece of history earlier in the evening, converting a penalty to cancel out Ivan Perisic’s opener and record his first-ever goal in a World Cup knockout match. The strike also moved him level with Lionel Messi on 26 World Cup finals appearances — a record for any outfield player.

Yet for all the symbolism of that milestone, the 41-year-old’s tournament almost ended there and then. He was substituted in the 81st minute by manager Roberto Martinez, watching from the bench as Ramos’ header from a sublime cross clinched Portugal’s passage to the last 16 in the game’s final moments.

The match had been a nervy affair from the outset. Portugal pressed aggressively in the opening exchanges, flooding crosses into the box in an effort to involve Ronaldo, but he ended the first half without a single touch inside the Croatia penalty area, repeatedly drifting deep in search of the ball rather than holding his position.

Croatia took the lead through the experienced Perisic, who rifled a low strike beyond Diogo Costa after a cross dropped perfectly to him at the back of the box. An offside flag denied Croatia an immediate second, and Rafael Leao rattled the crossbar as Portugal sought a response.

Ronaldo’s penalty, awarded shortly after the hour mark, drew Portugal level and made history — though a shoulder’s width of offside had correctly ruled out a header from him moments before. His evening ended with that spot-kick as his final contribution, Martinez opting to withdraw him with nine minutes remaining.

The timing of the substitution was sharpened by a revelation off the pitch. Before the match, Ronaldo’s sister Katia Aveiro had publicly suggested this World Cup would be his last, all but confirming that international retirement awaits whenever Portugal’s campaign concludes. Given his age and the visible decline in his physical output, the news was not entirely surprising — but her words still landed with considerable weight.

Ramos ensured that confirmation will have to wait a little longer. His stoppage-time header spared Portugal from an early exit and preserved Ronaldo’s slim but still-breathing chance of winning the one major trophy that has eluded him throughout an extraordinary career.
