Several players from the Argentina team risk suspension after displaying a banner with a political message during celebrations following their stunning victory against England. Lissandro Martinez and Giovani Lo Celso are among the players concerned, which could rule them out of the final.

After trailing until the final minutes — as they had against Egypt in the round of 16 — the Argentines turned the tide thanks to goals from Enzo Fernandez and Lissandro Martinez. In the euphoria following the final whistle, several players displayed a banner reading: “The Falklands are Argentine”.

The reference is direct: the Falkland Islands, called Malvinas by Argentines, are at the heart of a historical territorial dispute between Buenos Aires and London, which led to war in 1982. While effective control of the archipelago — 3,000 inhabitants, 12,173 km² — is in British hands, the UN considers it a non-self-governing territory whose sovereignty remains undetermined.

This gesture could have serious sporting consequences. FIFA formally prohibits the display of messages of a political, religious or personal nature on the pitch, relying on Law 4 of the Laws of the Game established by IFAB, which governs player equipment and objects used during official celebrations.

The reigning world champions have therefore exposed themselves to disciplinary proceedings. Any potential sanction will depend, however, on the interpretation of FIFA’s Disciplinary Committee and its assessment of the political nature of the message. If suspensions were to be handed down, Lionel Scaloni’s team would approach the final without several key players.
