Premier League rivals weigh expulsion push after Man City found guilty of all financial charges

Manchester City have been found guilty of every charge brought against them by an independent Premier League commission, which determined the club systematically broke the league’s financial rules across nine seasons between 2009 and 2018. The verdict, published on Tuesday, also found City guilty of the majority of charges relating to a failure to co-operate with the investigation.

The Premier League confirmed the outcome in a formal statement: “An independent Commission has found Manchester City FC guilty of all charges related to serious breaches of the Premier League’s financial rules over a nine-season period, and the majority of charges in relation to its failure to co-operate with the League’s investigation.”

League chief executive Richard Masters described the ruling as the most significant disciplinary decision in Premier League history. “The core decision establishes the facts of what happened at Manchester City during this period,” Masters said. “It details how the club systematically broke Premier League Rules for nearly a decade. It also vindicates the Premier League’s decision to pursue this case.”

Masters added that the league is committed to moving swiftly through the remaining stages of the process, which crucially includes determining what sanctions City must face. “It is paramount that the League remains competitive and fair for all clubs and for the fans,” he said.

According to reports from The Times, several rival Premier League clubs have been left reeling by the verdict and may unite in calling for City to be expelled from the top flight. However, those clubs are said to be holding off on any formal demands until the sanctions phase of proceedings is complete.

No definitive penalties will be imposed until the full process concludes. While purely speculative at this stage, potential consequences discussed include relegation from the Premier League, the stripping of titles won during the relevant period, points deductions, and transfer bans.

City retain the right to appeal the ruling, which they are widely expected to exercise. Any appeal must be submitted by Friday. The club has not yet issued a detailed public response to the verdict.
