Manchester City’s 114 financial charges case is casting a growing shadow over the Premier League season, with rival clubs said to be furious at the lack of resolution and a sports lawyer warning that the club’s appeal faces significant hurdles.

According to The Telegraph, clubs across the top flight believe an appeal verdict will not be delivered before the season concludes, leaving them uncertain about the standing of final league positions. City’s rivals are said to be angered by the club’s unwillingness to agree a settlement that would bring the process to a close.

“The talk among clubs is that nobody can see it getting sorted out this season,” a source told The Telegraph. “That’s a massive problem because nobody is sure what they are playing for and whether or not the final positions will stand.”

A sanctions hearing is currently under way, with potential punishments ranging from a financial penalty to expulsion from the Premier League. The three-person commission that found City in breach of financial rules is responsible for determining those sanctions, and the latest reports suggest a decision on possible punishments could come before the end of the current campaign.

Separately, City have lodged an appeal against the guilty verdict, though a sports lawyer has outlined why overturning the decision may prove difficult. The club are not expected to learn the outcome of that appeal until early 2027 at the earliest.

On the pitch, the charges have done little to disrupt City’s form. Enzo Maresca’s side remain top of the Premier League after beating Ipswich Town, but the uncertainty hanging over the club’s standing in the table is a source of mounting frustration among their rivals.
