Premier League clubs 'fuming' as City face points deductions after guilty verdict on 114 charges
Manchester City are appealing a guilty verdict on 114 financial violations handed down by an independent Premier League commission. Rival clubs are reportedly furious, with potential penalties ranging from heavy fines to points deductions or even expulsion.
Manchester City are contesting a guilty verdict on 114 financial rule breaches after an independent commission found against them last month, with rival Premier League clubs said to be unanimously angry at the situation surrounding English football’s most decorated recent club.
The case remains active, with City having lodged an appeal against the guilty ruling. A final resolution this season is considered unlikely, though a separate sanctions hearing has been scheduled to examine the range of possible penalties the club could face.
Those penalties are significant. The hearing will consider outcomes spanning from a substantial financial fine through to multiple double-digit points deductions — and, at the most severe end, removal from the Premier League altogether. No punishment has yet been determined.
Despite the legal proceedings running in parallel to their season, City continue to compete on the pitch. In their first home league match since the guilty verdict was made public, Pep Guardiola’s side edged Ipswich Town 3-2, with Phil Foden and Erling Haaland both getting on the scoresheet.
The mood among City’s top-flight rivals is reported to be one of frustration, with clubs understood to be united in their desire for a swift and meaningful resolution. The drawn-out nature of the process — the charges themselves date back years — has compounded tensions across the division.
City have consistently denied any wrongdoing throughout the lengthy investigation and are expected to mount a robust challenge during the appeals process. The club’s legal team will contest both the guilty findings and, if necessary, any sanctions that follow from the scheduled hearing.
