Manchester United and Chelsea open the ninth round of Premier League fixtures on Saturday, with both clubs missing key personnel following a midweek Carabao Cup schedule that left several squads stretched and freshly depleted.

Arsenal

Mikel Arteta is without a cluster of first-team regulars. Riccardo Calafiori (hip and stomach), Declan Rice (knock), and Noni Madueke (ankle) are all targeting a return for the November 1 trip to Liverpool, as is winger Christos Tzolis (thigh). William Saliba is sidelined with a back problem and is not expected back until November 20 against Newcastle. Most significantly, Bukayo Saka faces an extended absence with a quad injury, with his return pencilled in for December or early January 2027.

Arteta confirmed the scale of the problem after the Carabao Cup defeat at Fleetwood Town: “Calafiori was out, Noni was out with an ankle issue. And Declan finished with a problem the other day. That’s why I had to substitute him.”

Aston Villa

Unai Emery is managing four absentees of varying severity. Modou Keba Cisse (groin) could return for the October 31 home fixture against Fulham. Aaron Wan-Bissaka (hamstring) is expected back around November 21, while Matteo Ruggeri (hamstring) is targeting a December 2 return against Everton. Amadou Onana faces the longest road to recovery after an ACL injury, with his return projected for approximately April 2027.

Speaking before last weekend’s win over Manchester City, Emery said: “We are still being with players who are clearly out like Onana, Aaron and Ruggeri. Some have some pain, but I can’t tell you now until after the training session.”

Bournemouth

Marco Rose has three players working their way back to fitness. Alex Scott (hamstring) and Eli Junior Kroupi (foot) are both targeting November 8 against Ipswich, while Julian Araujo (hamstring) is expected to return around November 21 at home to Nottingham Forest. Veljko Milosavljevic (knee) has no confirmed return date.

Rose offered an encouraging update on Kroupi: “Junior needs some more training to respond better to the load. We’re going to train hard and improve his match time. Everyone at the club is really happy to have this guy back.”

On Scott, Rose added: “He’s on the pitch, he works hard, he has no problems. He didn’t train with the team so far, but I’m quite sure that he’s going to do it the next couple of days.”

With the Premier League entering its most congested stretch of the calendar, the depth of each squad’s injury list is already shaping the title race and the battle at the bottom.
