Pierre Ménès slams Bertrand Latour over Mbappé Ballon d'Or attacks
Former Canal Football Club pundit Pierre Ménès has harshly criticized his successor Bertrand Latour, who called Kylian Mbappé's second-place finish at the 2026 Ballon d'Or a "robbery". Ménès branded the outburst "deplorable and shameful".
Pierre Ménès strongly rebuked Bertrand Latour on YouTube after the Canal+ pundit repeatedly attacked Kylian Mbappé around the 2026 Ballon d’Or, even calling a potential triumph for the France captain a “disgrace” before the ceremony, then his final second-place finish a “robbery”.
The former Canal Football Club commentator did not mince words. “What really shocks me is that he’s the guy covering the France team, and he’ll probably ask Mbappé a question next time,” he said. “If I were Mbappé, and I think he’ll be made aware of Latour’s outburst, I’d give him a little jab at the next France press conference.”
Ménès also highlighted what he sees as a French peculiarity. “It’s only in France that you see a journalist from a major broadcaster allow himself to make a statement like that about his national team’s captain,” he continued. “I can’t imagine an English journalist, even an Arsenal supporter, making such comments about Harry Kane. I don’t see a Spanish journalist, even a Real Madrid fan, making such statements about Lamine Yamal.”
The former pundit also preemptively dismissed any suggestion his position was motivated by corporate loyalty. “I’m not saying this at all because he supposedly took my place at Canal, as some say. I left Canal five years ago and he’s only been there for two years,” he clarified, before concluding: “I can’t help but find it absolutely deplorable and shameful, but it doesn’t surprise me from him.”
Latour had also, according to Ménès, “done it again by getting angry to delusional extremes against other people” since his initial outburst, which apparently convinced the former journalist to raise his voice.
