Ponzinibbio returns to UFC Abu Dhabi to face Sam Patterson on July 25

Santiago Ponzinibbio, once a welterweight title contender, is back on the UFC roster for a July 25 bout against England's Sam Patterson at the Etihad Arena. The Argentine, 39, has won just three of his last eight fights after a string of health setbacks derailed a promising run.

Santiago Ponzinibbio will make his return to the octagon at UFC Abu Dhabi on July 25, facing England’s Sam Patterson in a welterweight contest at the Etihad Arena. The UFC confirmed the matchup on Friday, adding the bout to a card headlined by the light heavyweight clash between former champion Magomed Ankalaev and Khalil Rountree Jr.

Ponzinibbio (30-9) has not competed since May 2025, and his latest assignment comes at a difficult point in his career. The 39-year-old Argentine was once a genuine title contender, stringing together seven consecutive victories between 2015 and 2018 that had him knocking on the door of a welterweight championship shot. A series of health problems then interrupted his momentum, and a comeback fight against Li Jingliang in 2021 ended in defeat. He has managed only three wins from his last eight outings, most recently suffering a third-round knockout loss to Daniel Rodriguez.

Patterson (14-3-1) arrives in similar need of a statement performance. His last appearance, a welterweight bout against Michael Page in March, drew widespread criticism for its lack of engagement — the two fighters, who are friends and training partners, were widely seen as unwilling to commit. Before that contest, Patterson had reeled off four straight finishes, all by knockout or submission, suggesting the tools are there when the intent is.

The fight gives both men a chance to rebuild relevance in a welterweight division that continues to evolve around them. For Ponzinibbio, a win could reopen conversations about a late-career push; for Patterson, it is an opportunity to prove the Page performance was an aberration rather than a pattern.

The confirmed UFC Abu Dhabi lineup, with bout order still to be finalised, is as follows:

Magomed Ankalaev vs. Khalil Rountree Jr., Steve Erceg vs. Ramazan Temirov, Rizvan Kuniev vs. Tyrell Fortune, Islam Dulatov vs. Wellington Turman, Santiago Ponzinibbio vs. Sam Patterson, Ismael Bonfim vs. Axel Sola, Valter Walker vs. Thomas Petersen, Uran Satybaldiev vs. Dustin Jacoby, Magomed Tuchalov vs. Brendson Ribeiro, Magomed Zaynukov vs. Damian Rzepecki, and Mike Davis vs. Nurullo Aliev.
