Andrea Piardi will make United Rugby Championship history on Friday night when he referees the Grand Final between Leinster and the Bulls at Croke Park, becoming the first official to take charge of four consecutive URC showpieces.

The Italian’s appointment continues a remarkable run of finals appearances for the 2019 URC referee of the year. He will be assisted by Welsh officials Adam Jones and Ben Breakspear, with fellow Italian Matteo Liperini serving as TMO.

The final is a direct repeat of last year’s decider, which Leinster won 32-7. The Irish province are bidding to retain their title, while the Pretoria-based Bulls are chasing a first URC championship despite appearing in three of the previous four finals — a record that underlines both their consistency and their frustration at the final hurdle.

Leinster’s preparations have been complicated by injury concerns at the top of their squad. Head coach Leo Cullen confirmed that captain Caelan Doris and hooker Dan Sheehan are both being monitored, with decisions on their availability expected closer to kick-off. The absence of either player would represent a significant blow to Leinster’s hopes of back-to-back titles.
