Peter Taylor returns to international football at 73 as Thailand name him assistant coach

Peter Taylor, the former England caretaker manager best remembered for handing David Beckham the national captaincy, has been appointed assistant coach of the Thailand national team at the age of 73.

Thailand head coach Anthony Hudson confirmed Taylor’s addition to his backroom staff ahead of the FIFA ASEAN Cup, with the Thailand FA citing his experience as the driving force behind the appointment. Taylor will work alongside fellow English assistant Kane Wintersgill within the set-up.

Hudson said: “Regarding Peter Taylor, we wanted to bring in an additional support member to assist with training. Of course, he isn’t coming in to replace anyone or take over anyone’s role, but rather to support the entire staff and help make our work more efficient.”

Taylor’s connection with Hudson is not new. In 2016, he joined Hudson’s staff at New Zealand, where he was based in England and scouted All Whites players competing in Europe — among them former West Ham defender Winston Reid and Chris Wood, then at Leeds United.

Taylor’s own history with England is brief but significant. The Essex-born coach managed the Three Lions for a single game in November 2000 — a 1-0 defeat to Italy — after stepping in as caretaker following Kevin Keegan’s sudden resignation. In that match, he gave senior debuts to Gareth Barry, Jamie Carragher and Rio Ferdinand, and placed the captain’s armband on Beckham for the first time.

Before his managerial career, Taylor had a notable playing history, representing Crystal Palace and Tottenham among others during the 1970s and 1980s, and earning four England caps with two goals in 1976. His coaching path began as a player-manager at Dartford before Glenn Hoddle brought him in to manage the England Under-21s in 1996.

Since his caretaker role with the senior side, Taylor has accumulated 16 managerial positions across more than two decades, including stints at Leicester City, Brighton, Hull City, Crystal Palace, a second spell with the England Under-21s, and the Bahrain national team. His most recent club role came at non-league Canvey Island FC.

The Thailand appointment marks his return to international football and reunites him with Hudson in a support capacity for the upcoming regional tournament.
