Pereira vows to refuse fights if Herb Dean referees again after UFC White House loss to Gane
Alex Pereira has declared he will walk away from any fight assigned to referee Herb Dean, following his controversial defeat to Ciryl Gane at UFC White House. The Brazilian also confirmed he is targeting the heavyweight division and awaiting medical clearance for a rematch.
Alex Pereira has issued an ultimatum to the UFC: assign Herb Dean to referee any of his future bouts and he will not compete. The Brazilian made the declaration in a YouTube interview with fellow fighter Renato “Moicano” Carneiro, one day after publicly criticising Dean’s officiating in his loss to Ciryl Gane at UFC White House.
Pereira’s anger centres on a sequence of illegal strikes he believes Dean failed to act on during the fight. When Dean posted a video explaining the prohibited zone and clarifying his decision, Pereira was unmoved. “This video is a joke,” he said. “The guy puts a coin and says here you can’t hit, but there’s an area around it where you put a limit. The fact is that if he signaled during the fight, my opponent would certainly think about the possibility of the fight being stopped there.”
The former light heavyweight champion stopped short of calling for the result to be overturned to a no contest by the athletic commission, but left no ambiguity about his position on Dean. “I don’t know how the refereeing of a fight is defined, but if in my next fight the commission insists that it has to be him, I won’t fight anymore, period,” Pereira said. “Thank God I am very happy with everything I have already achieved.”
He also used the interview to frame his stance in broader personal terms. “My dream was never to feel hungry. I achieved much more by securing a peaceful future for my children and my family,” he said — a remark that underlines how seriously he is prepared to follow through on the threat.
On the question of his physical condition, Pereira revealed he underwent head examinations on Tuesday following the concussion he sustained in the Gane fight and is awaiting results. He reported no alarming symptoms beyond localised pain from the blows received.
“When the exam results come, if everything is OK, I will make myself available to the UFC for the rematch,” he said. “My focus now is 100% on the heavyweight division. Actually my focus is the belt, but whatever the UFC decides, I will be ready.”
Pereira’s willingness to move up to heavyweight while simultaneously demanding a rematch at light heavyweight leaves his next step dependent on both his medical clearance and the UFC’s matchmaking decisions. What is no longer in doubt is his position on Dean: the referee’s involvement is, for Pereira, a non-starter.
