Eli Oudenryn is set to make his Super Rugby debut from the bench when the Blues travel to Hamilton to face the Chiefs in Round 16, with head coach Vern Cotter managing a significant injury toll that rules out Beauden Barrett, Patrick Tuipulotu and Bradley Slater.

Oudenryn, who moved north from the Crusaders and Tasman over the offseason, will wear the No.16 jersey after earning his opportunity through standout performances for the Blues development side, where he was named Development Player of the Year.

Despite the absentees, Cotter has been able to recall Josh Beehre, Joshua Fusitu’a, Corey Evans and Codemeru Vai to the matchday 23. Evans returns to Super Rugby action for the first time this season after impressing for Northland in last year’s NPC.

There is also a positional reshuffle among the forwards, with Hoskins Sotutu dropping to a reserve role. Malachi Wrampling moves to No.8, while Torian Barnes comes in at blindside flank.

The match carries considerable weight in the standings. The Blues currently sit third in the Super Rugby Pacific table, and Cotter acknowledged the stakes heading into Chiefs territory.

“Every week at this stage of the season carries significance, and this one is no different. Our focus is on ourselves this week and executing our game plan,” Cotter said.

“We know what’s on the line heading into Hamilton and we’re excited by the opportunity. The Chiefs are a quality side and playing them away is always a huge challenge.”

Cotter also welcomed the return of Fusitu’a and Evans from extended injury layoffs. “They’ve worked hard to get back, and they add real energy to the group,” he said.
