O'Reilly ruled out of England's Czech Republic trip as Ngumoha earns call-up

Nico O’Reilly will miss England’s Nations League fixture against the Czech Republic in Prague on Tuesday after being ruled out following a training absence, with Liverpool teenager Rio Ngumoha called up in his place.

The Manchester City defender completed the full 90 minutes of England’s 3-2 defeat to Spain at Wembley on Saturday but did not train with the main group on Monday. The FA confirmed that O’Reilly and fellow starter Ezri Konsa both followed individual programmes at the Tottenham Hotspur training ground, though Konsa is expected to be fit enough to remain in Thomas Tuchel’s squad.

Ngumoha, who had been omitted from the original selection for the Spain game, steps in to fill the vacancy left by O’Reilly’s withdrawal.

O’Reilly had been one of the more involved figures in Saturday’s defeat, assisting Harry Kane’s goal shortly before half-time to put England 2-1 ahead. However, he later lost possession in a move that allowed substitute Alex Baena to equalise for the world champions, who had taken an early lead through Lamine Yamal’s second-minute strike. Mikel Oyarzabal’s winner in the second half completed the comeback for Luis de la Fuente’s side, who also benefited from Kane missing a penalty.

Marc Guehi, at fault for Yamal’s opener, was substituted during the match and replaced by Jarrad Branthwaite. The Everton centre-back could be asked to cover for Konsa should the Arsenal defender not be fully fit to start.

Tuchel addressed the potential impact of news that Manchester City have been found guilty of 114 of the 115 charges relating to alleged breaches of Premier League financial rules, suggesting it may have affected his City players. “Not for me, but I can imagine for the Manchester City players,” he said when asked whether the news had been a distraction. “For the players who have more time than me, for sure I can imagine they talk about it.”

England have four matches scheduled during this international break, with home and away fixtures against the Czech Republic either side of a trip to Croatia.
