Oliveira stops Fili on featherweight debut and targets ranked opponent at UFC Fight Night 279
Vinicius Oliveira made an immediate statement at featherweight, stopping Andre Fili in the second round at UFC Fight Night 279 in Las Vegas before calling out Josh Emmett and demanding a top-12 opponent for his next outing.
Vinicius Oliveira wasted no time announcing himself at featherweight, finishing Andre Fili by stoppage in the second round at UFC Fight Night 279 on Saturday at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas. The Brazilian improved his record to 24-4 and immediately set his sights on a ranked opponent.
Oliveira absorbed heavy body kicks from Fili (25-14) in the opening round but found his range midway through the second, hurting his opponent with a sharp 1-2 before swarming with a barrage of follow-up shots to force the stoppage.
In his post-fight interview, Oliveira named No. 15-ranked Josh Emmett as a potential next opponent but made clear he believes his credentials warrant something more prestigious. Having been ranked inside the top 12 at bantamweight, he argued the UFC should match him accordingly at 145 pounds.
“If the UFC want to give me Josh Emmett, Top 15, I’ll be ready to fight with him,” Oliveira said. “But I hope the UFC give me a Top 12 opponent, but I don’t know who. In my former division, bantamweight, I was Top 12. So I think I deserve the chance to fight a Top 12 opponent.”
The move to featherweight follows a difficult stretch at bantamweight. Oliveira had gone undefeated across four UFC appearances before suffering his first promotional loss to Mario Bautista in February, a defeat that came in his first UFC main event. The gruelling weight cut — reportedly around 50 pounds — is understood to have been a significant factor in the decision to move up a division.
With a clean first performance at the new weight class behind him, Oliveira will now wait to see whether the UFC honours his request for a top-12 test or opts for the Emmett route as an immediate step into the rankings.
