Michael Olise has not yet come to terms with France’s 0-2 defeat to Spain in the World Cup semi-final when his future at Bayern Munich is already the subject of speculation. According to L’Équipe, the 24-year-old attacking midfielder would like to join Real Madrid to take his career to the next level.

The timing is peculiar. Olise, one of the standout performers in France’s opening matches of the tournament, struggled in the semi-final against Spain before being substituted in the 72nd minute by Rayan Cherki. The Blues still have a third-place playoff to play against England in Miami, but the transfer market is already making headlines around the player.

In Munich, the tune is radically different. Journalist Florian Plettenberg assures that Bayern has no intention of parting with their player. Better still, the Bavarian club is preparing a salary increase that would make him one of the three highest-paid players in the squad.

Two factors support Bayern’s confidence in this matter, according to Plettenberg. First, Florentino Perez personally assured that he does not plan to recruit Olise this summer — the cordial relations between the two clubs making this promise credible. Second, neither Olise nor his entourage have, at this stage, expressed any desire to leave to Munich’s management.

The French version, meanwhile, suggests that the Olise camp is testing the waters through targeted leaks to the press. A classic tactic in contract negotiations, where the stated interest of a major club serves as leverage to obtain better terms — including from his own employer.
