Ocon declares himself a 'free agent' as Haas weighs up 2027 driver options

Esteban Ocon has declared himself a “free agent” for the 2027 Formula 1 season, confirming he is in discussions with other teams while Haas continues to assess its driver pairing alongside Ollie Bearman.

“Yes, at the moment I am definitely a free agent for next year,” Ocon said. “There are things in discussion that are out of my control and there are certain topics that are out of my control. So I will keep pushing until the end of the year and see how it goes.”

When asked directly whether remaining at Haas was still a possibility, Ocon offered only a guarded “let’s see”, leaving the door open without committing to anything.

Haas has been running several candidates through its testing of previous cars (TPC) programme as it searches for a potential partner for Bearman next season. Ferrari junior Rafael Camara — currently the reigning F3 champion and second in this year’s F2 standings — Leonardo Fornaroli, the reigning F2 champion, and reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa are all understood to be in contention. Recent reports suggest Camara is the frontrunner, though team principal Ayao Komatsu said at the Spanish Grand Prix that he had “maybe five” drivers under consideration.

Ocon’s seat has been under pressure for some time, even as his own form has improved. The Frenchman pointed to a string of strong individual performances undermined by reliability and consistency problems with the car itself — an issue Komatsu has attributed to possible aerodynamic sensitivity or parts quality control, with the team still investigating the root cause.

“It’s reassuring that I’m doing a good job. Obviously, my performance hasn’t been an issue this year,” Ocon said. “I’ve performed every time I had the car. I’ve been the last one to score in Monaco. I was almost scoring in Madrid. There’s been a lot of times where I’ve performed when the car was underperforming. It’s been clear.”

He acknowledged the frustration of those circumstances: “It’s been quite disappointing at times, obviously, to have these kind of problems.”

Bearman, meanwhile, was asked whether he felt ready to assume a leadership role at Haas should Ocon leave. The Briton said he had learned a great deal from his team-mate across their nearly two seasons together.
