Northampton's young guns end English drought in Champions Cup with 28-12 win over Cardiff
Northampton Saints defeated Cardiff 28-12 in the Investec Champions Cup on Saturday, ending a seven-game losing streak for English clubs in the competition. Director of rugby Phil Dowson rested several key players with the East Midlands derby at Leicester looming next weekend.
Northampton Saints ended a miserable run of seven consecutive defeats for English clubs in the Investec Champions Cup, beating Cardiff 28-12 to open their European campaign with a victory built largely on the contributions of fringe players.
Director of rugby Phil Dowson made sweeping changes ahead of next Saturday’s East Midlands derby at Leicester, resting Henry Pollock, Tommy Freeman and Alex Coles while naming Fin Smith on the bench. Far from suffering for the rotation, Saints produced a composed performance that answered questions about their squad depth.
James Pater and Toby Thame crossed in the first half to give Northampton a 14-0 lead at the break. Cardiff rallied after the interval through Harri Millard and then Mason Grady, whose try pulled the Welsh side to within two points and briefly threatened a comeback. George Hendy’s try steadied Saints, and Fraser Dingwall sealed the result late on.
Dowson was particularly encouraged by the contributions of Pater and Charlie Ulcoq, both making their European debuts. “It’s always exciting to see people on that journey — James Pater and Charlie Ulcoq playing their first European game is exciting and we try and make sure they know how special that is,” he said.
The Northampton head coach acknowledged the challenge of managing two competitions simultaneously but insisted the club would not shy away from it. “Everyone at this time of year wants to go deep in both tournaments, whether it’s league or cup or whatever else, and we’re no different. We’re going to have to trust the squad, we’re going to have to use the depth, we’re going to have to give people opportunities and see how they react to pressure.”
Cardiff head coach Corniel van Zyl was similarly upbeat about his own debutants despite the defeat, highlighting the contributions of Tom Manz and Sion Davies, who both made their first appearances for the club. Toby Faletau’s return from injury was also welcomed. “I think just looking at that, the changes we were forced to make to manage next week, we can be really proud of the boys and how they stepped up,” van Zyl said.
The result leaves Northampton with early momentum in their European pool, while Cardiff must regroup quickly before their next fixture against the Sharks.
